Behind the Veil: Katie and Josh’s Wedding

October 11, 2017

Brides, if you are looking for a romantic and classic wedding to inspire your own wedding day, look no further than Katie and Josh’s wedding! I checked in with Katie after tying the knot and asked her all about the day. The details came together beautifully and this timeless wedding was captured by the talented Steven with Steven Michael Photography! Check out what Katie had to say about their big day!

Tell us about your wedding! When it was, where it was at, and who helped put it together?

Katie: Our wedding was truly the best day of my life. Josh and I got engaged in October of 2016 and I knew I didn’t want too long of an engagement – I was so ready to be married to the man of my dreams! For anyone that has planned a wedding in Kansas City, you know that while we have amazing venues at our fingertips, they book up very quickly. We got to work coordinating first with our church and then found a venue and set a date, July 29th, 2017!

Katie: We were very fortunate that Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church is unbelievably beautiful. The old architecture, large statues, and detailed paintings resulted in absolutely no extra décor or flowers. As member of the church we enjoyed attending mass each week and envisioning out upcoming wedding come to life.

This church is so beautiful and such a memorable place to be married!

Katie: Josh was amazing through the entire wedding planning process but an especially helpful task was touring reception venues and coming to me with some must-see options. After we visited 28 Event Space and learned about their new space called The Station, we had no doubt this was the place for us. as it had that super clean, modern, “let’s party” feel to it. A huge plus of the space is that it includes a two-bed/two-bath suite that can be used the day of the event! Also included with the space is a coordinator, tables, chairs, linens, bartenders, and transportation. Yes, transportation! We had a 20 person party bus drive the wedding party to the church, around town for pictures, and drop us all off at the reception. The included coordination was one less thing on my to-do list.

Katie: It didn’t take long for us to decide on Brancato’s to be our caterer. Since we were already pushing the 200 person capacity at the event space, I wanted to find a caterer that could provide a plated meal. This was harder than I thought it would be. Working with Michelle at Brancato’s gave me so much confidence that we didn’t have to worry about a thing. She knew all the questions to ask, made great suggestions when I wasn’t sure which direction to go, and had an incredibly professional team the day of the wedding.

How did you pick your wedding gown?

Katie: I wasn’t sure where to start with the wedding gown shopping process so to be honest, I Google searched “wedding shops Kansas City.” Thank goodness for Google! I’m all about shopping/eating/drinking local and was intrigued when Fabulous Frocks came up on my search. I made an appointment at FF and another local shop for the next Saturday morning with the perfect dress in mind – short sleeves, open back, lace details, and a long train. Not what I ended up in, right?

Katie: I invited my mom, my future MIL, my future SIL, and best friend to come shopping with me and we headed to FF. We were greeted by Angela in her adorable shop just west of the Country Club Plaza. Angela and I talked about price points and style before we had the shop to ourselves to explore gowns. Although I had the “perfect” gown in mind, I was open to trying on different styles. I tried on everything you could imagine knowing that I would have super-hot July weather on my wedding day. (Side note: the weather ended up being PERFECT!)

Katie: I totally believe in the “when you know, you know” phrase that so many brides say when they have found their wedding gown. It was a strapless, sweetheart neckline down with a gorgeous lace overlay with a floral design. I just knew. I felt beautiful, comfortable, and loved the vision of walking down the aisle and Josh seeing me in this amazing gown. I had another appointment and I felt like I should honor the appointment and thanked Angela for all of her help. My second appointment experience was very different as there were swarms of people everywhere despite requiring an appointment. Long story short, all I could think about was leaving and calling Angela to say I was coming back for my wedding gown! It was probably the third out of a dozen dresses I tried on and in the end I went back to “the one.”

Such a sharp looking couple! The black suits with black bow ties were perfect for Katie and Josh’s classic wedding style.

Fab Frocks: Any advice for future brides?

Katie: First, be open minded. The wedding day we had is not the one I envisioned the day we got engaged. It was so much better! Trusting professional opinions and not sweating the small things will go a long way. Second, do not turn down help! Even if it is something as simple as stamping envelopes, it is one less thing you have to do. And third, no one will know if something goes wrong. Imagine walking down the aisle and seeing a complete stranger standing at the podium because the singer you booked was in the hospital with a sick child? That happened to me. Things work out and no one knows the difference.

I love how they are looking so lovingly at each other!

Hooray! The happy couple is married! Congrats to Katie and Josh!
