Bridal Terminology: Fabrics!

April 24, 2023

Happy Monday, brides! Today we wanted to share with you the different fabrics of wedding gowns. Knowing what fabrics you like helps make your dress shopping experience a breeze!

Crepe

Love the sleek look? It’s super popular right now, and one of the most common fabrics for this style is crepe. It’s lightweight and matte, with a little bit of stretch to it! Most often, you can find crepe in fitted gowns. Sometimes, designers combine crepe with a touch of lace for a pop of detail. Additionally, brides are fascinated by its comfort and clean look!

Mikado

Similar to crepe is mikado, which is a silk blend with a sheen similar to satin. Unlike crepe, it has more weight to it and provides plenty of structure. Although crepe is often found in fitted gowns, mikado is equally as popular in fitted and full gowns. Also similar to crepe, it is used to combine detail with a classic look, as many mikado gowns feature some lace or detail with the crisp fabric.

Tulle

One of the most popular fabrics is tulle, which is a very lightweight and delicate fabric. It is in gowns of all silhouettes, and is often the fabric in which lace appliqués are placed upon. Unlike crepe and mikado, it is sheer and is frequently seen in multiple layers. Look familiar? Tulle is also what veils are made of, allowing your veil to melt perfectly into your gown!

Brocade & Jacquard

Similar to mikado are brocade and jacquard. These are gowns with a textured pattern. They are perfect for a bride looking for something classic with a unique touch! Additionally, brocade and jacquard fabrics are used in both fitted and flowy silhouettes.

Chiffon

Unlike the stiff and structured fabrics such as mikado and brocade, chiffon is light and airy. It is most often used in skirts on A-lines for a romantic and flowy shape. However, sometimes chiffon is used in more fitted styles, as well!

Organza

Similar to chiffon is organza, another lightweight and flowy fabric. Unlike chiffon, organza is more translucent, often backed by multiple layers of lining or organza. It is perfect for A-lines and ballgowns.
