Everything You Need to Know About Wedding Dress Alterations 🤍

April 22, 2026

You’ve found the dress, cue the happy tears! Now it’s time for the step that truly brings it to life: alterations.

Alterations are where your gown becomes uniquely yours, fitted to your body and your vision for your wedding day. While it’s one of the most important parts of the bridal process, it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

We asked one of our trusted seamstresses, Kelsey from Patient & Kind Alterations, to share her expert advice, and we’re adding a few of our own tips to make sure you feel completely prepared 🤍

✨ When to Start Alterations

Start earlier than you think.

Alterations are not a one-and-done appointment. Most brides will need 2–3 fittings over a 6–8 week period, so plan to begin about 2–3 months before your wedding (and even earlier during busy seasons!).

Giving yourself plenty of time allows for adjustments, fine-tuning, and peace of mind leading up to your big day.

✨ What to Bring to Every Fitting

Your Wedding Shoes

Your hem depends entirely on your shoe height. Even a small difference can affect how your dress falls, so bring the exact pair you plan to wear (or one of the same height).

Your Undergarments

The right undergarments can completely change how your dress fits.

Whether it’s shapewear, a specific bra, or built-in cups, bring what you plan to wear so your seamstress can tailor everything perfectly to your body.

✨ Budgeting for Alterations

Alterations are almost always an additional cost beyond your gown, and pricing can vary based on the level of work required.

From simple hemming to intricate lace or beadwork adjustments, it’s important to plan ahead and set aside a budget to avoid surprises.

A good seamstress will walk you through pricing clearly so you feel confident every step of the way 🤍

✨ Comfort is Everything

This is your wedding day, you’ll be walking, sitting, hugging, and dancing for hours.

If something feels:

  • Too tight
  • Scratchy
  • Restricting

Speak up.

As Kelsey says, your seamstress can adjust more than you think. Your dress should not only look beautiful, but it should also feel amazing, too ✨

✨ Practice Your Bustle

Bustling your dress is one of the most important (and often overlooked) parts of alterations.

Kelsey’s tip:

  • Ask your seamstress to record a video of the bustle being done
  • Or bring someone from your bridal party to your final fitting to learn in person

Trust us, this will make your reception so much smoother!

✨ Additional Tips From Us

Trust the Process

Your dress may not feel perfect at the first fitting, and that’s completely normal. Alterations are done in stages, and each appointment gets you closer to that final look.

Order the Right Size

Always order the size that fits you best now. It’s much easier to take a dress in than to let it out.

Move Around

Don’t just stand still, walk, sit, and even do a little dance during your fitting. This ensures your dress works with your body, not against it.

🤍 A Final Thought

Alterations are where the magic happens. It’s the moment your dress goes from something you love to something that feels like it was made just for you.

With the right timing, preparation, and a seamstress you trust, this part of the process can feel just as special as finding your dress!
