Hey brides! Happy Thursday! Okay, you’ve got your rock – it’s time to find your frock! But, what kind of frock?! Here’s your guide to gown silhouettes so that you sound like a pro when it’s time to start shopping!
Aline
Alines are perfect for the bride who want the drama of a fuller skirt, but still want something easy to wear. They are fitted in the bodice, and flare out at the natural waist creating an ‘A’ shape in the gown.
Stylist tip: Adding a leg split in the skirt offers even more mobility making it easier to move (and go to the bathroom! haha!)
Ballgown
About as extra as you can get! Similar to an aline, a ballgown is fitted through the bodice and flares out at your natural waist, just in a more dramatic fashion! Often times, ballgowns have pleats in the skirt at the waistline to create more volume right off the hips. In addition, there is usually layers of crinoline (or a petticoat) to create more volume at the bottom of the skirt.
Stylist tip: Try different fabrics when trying a ballgown! There is often a misconception that they are “toooo heavy!” but if you find the right fabric, you’re wearing the dress, it isn’t wearing you!
Fit-and-Flare
If you’ve got it, flaunt it! This silhouette is for the bride who wants to accentuate the figure, but still be comfortable. This style hugs the body at the bust, waist, and hips then flaring at the thigh to allow for dancing the night away!
Stylist tip: Want to show off your body but have the drama of a full skirt? Ask your stylist what an overskirt could look like for your style preferences and budget π
Mermaid
Another flattering silhouette for the curvy bride. Similar to a fit-and-flare, the mermaid silhouette hugs you at the bust, waist, and hips. The difference is that rather than having a subtle flare, there is a more harsh flare right at the knee creating the drama at the bottom!
Stylist tip: Similar to a ballgown, try mermaid styles in different fabrics! The fabric pictured is a unique stretch mikado that still provides a comfy style that is easy to move in!
Mini
Time to party! Mini styles are perfect for nontraditional ceremonies, destination weddings, civil ceremonies, or just to tear up the dance floor! You’re the bride, you make the rules!
Stylist tip: The dress pictured comes with a ballgown overskirt. Surprise your guests with the ultimate reveal!
Sheath
A sheath silhouette is a form-fitting gown that closely follows the body’s natural shape, typically with a straight cut from the neckline to the hem. It creates a sleek, elegant silhouette without the dramatics of a mermaid or trumpet gown.
Stylist tip: If you still want the drama of a fit to flare, have your stylist help you find sheath gowns that have super structured bodices to really cinch in that waist! Hello SNATCHED!
